MAIDENS, MOTHERS & MATRIARCHS

Twelve songs inspired by the Great Goddesses of Ancient Greece.

Presented in ritual format with an invocation to the elements, and a protection chant at the beginning.

There follows a song to each of eight Goddesses, and the ceremony  closes with a blessing.

Every piece is designed to bring the listener into close relationship with herself as Goddess. By this means we can  experience Her as a living entity. Whether that association is literal or poetic I hope it will be like reconnecting with an old friend imparting a strong sense of bonding, love and empowerment

The musical styles are varied. I have chosen not to limit the instrumentation or structure in any way but to give full rein to whatever the particular feeling of the individual Goddess seemed to require. In general I have given prominence to rich vocal harmonies and used a diverse array of accompanying instruments.

AVE DEMETER

Three songs celebrating the differing aspects of Demeter.

Demeter is the Great Earth Mother whose daughter Persephone, the Maiden, is lost to Hecate, Queen of the Underworld. These three form the original Greek Triple Goddess, Maiden, Mother, Crone. These archetypes symbolize the changes in the journey of a womans life, and also the cycle of the seasons. (The ancient Greek calendar was divided into three seasons, spring, summer and winter) Over time, the character of Persephone changed and instead of the Maiden she became the Crone and her Maiden aspect was replaced by Kore

ARTEMIS

Goddess of the Wild, Mother of all Creatures and also The Huntress. She has a duel nature and is untameable.

ATHENE

A warrior Goddess whose attributes are strength and wisdom.  She is associated with childbirth and the family which is the origination and focus of her protective warrior function.

APHRODITE

She is more than just a "Love Goddess" Her role is to reconcile birth love life and death, time and fate through sensual and sexual mysticism.

HECATE

Great Queen of the Underworld Wise woman and Crone aspect of the Triple Goddess.

HESTIA

A Greek proverb says "Start with Hestia". She is Goddess of the Sacred Hearth, the place of warmth and nurture.
